Monthly Disposables:

About Monthly Disposables

Monthly lenses are a type of reusable lenses like weekly lenses. They are both affordable and comfortable which is probably the reason why they are the most popular lens type with lens wearers worldwide. You use them for a month and then throw them away and replace them for a fresh pair. You can find a monthly lens that suits your lifestyle needs. You can either select a traditional hydrogel lens that you take out in the evening or choose monthly lenses made of a revolutionary material Silicon Hydrogel which you can sleep in. Do you suffer from astigmatism? There is a monthly lens perfect for you too.

Who can use them?

Monthly lenses are an excellent alternative to glasses. They don’t take attention away from your natural beauty or hide your face. Do you live an active lifestyle? Use of lenses during exercise provides you with freedom of movement. How many athletes have you seen wearing glasses? Imagine a life where you can run without worrying about your glasses fogging up or falling off. You’re able to play a game of tennis without worrying that a stray ball can break your glasses. You can also swim and be able to see! With monthly lenses you can continue to enjoy your day. If you prefer wearing glasses for everyday use we recommend using Daily Disposable Contact Lenses for sports.

With monthly lenses you are also able to alter your appearance with coloured contact lenses. You are now able to customize your look according to your mood and your outfit from day to day, let your creativity flow!

How to care for your monthly lenses

Monthly lenses must be cleaned and disinfected every day. If you correctly care for your lenses you will remove at least 90% of all bacteria. To do this simply follow the following steps. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Place the lens in the palm of your hand and rub both sides of the lens using your little finger together with a few drops of lens solution. Rinse the lens with the lens solution and put it in the case. Fill the lens tray with solution and close the lids. Always read the instructions that come with your lens solution.

Extended wear lenses

Do you feel that you don’t have time to clean your lenses every day? Do you sleep with your monthly lenses in? Then go to your optician and ask to try lenses made with Silicon Hydrogel. This material lets in six times more oxygen to the eye enabling you to wear them for up to a month without changing them. This type of monthly contact lenses are ideal for those who want to see perfectly at any time during the day. These are ideal for people who work long shifts or forget to take their lenses out at night. You will feel like you're not wearing any lenses at all!

The history behind monthly disposable lenses

In the early 1500’s Leonardo da Vinci started sketching ideas for contact lenses but they did not become a reality until the late 1800’s. Monthly lenses can be attributed to a German glassblower called F. A. Müller, who made an ocular prosthesis made of glass to act as protection for a patient who had reduced blink function. In 1949 came the so-called corneal lenses, these were small and only covered the cornea instead of the entire eye. They were made from hard plastic called PMMA. They were relatively expensive, fragile and did not offer much comfort. PMMA lens' greatest problems was that they did not allow oxygen to the eye. Lack of oxygen in the eye can lead to serious infections and impaired visibility. In 1963 the first soft hydrogel lens, developed by Czech chemist Otto Wichterle, was launched. The development of materials for monthly lenses has progressed and although hydrogel lenses were not as strong and reliable as the lenses today it is still the most common material used. Lenses made from the material Silicon Hydrogel became available in 1999. They allowed so much oxygen into the eye that wearers can sleep with the lenses in and these go by the name Extended Wear Lenses.
